I'm still here (and still not the most faithful blogger in the world).
Our trip was better than we thought it would be. Two kids who travel well, sunshine, and summer temperatures made for one happy family! Now to actually finish unpacking, do laundry, and find the floor of the car (yes, we've been home over a week). I think I needed a week's vacation at home after our vacation to get back into the swing of daily life. That being said, we are already debating our next road trip with the kids!
I felt compelled to blog today with all the changes abound. The first thing on my mind is the demise of Bin Laden. Although I am glad that his leadership has ended, I cannot help but be saddened by how gleeful people are over his death. Don't be mistaken, I have no love for the man, but with the downright JOY and celebrating, are we really holding better values than he did? A friend of mine posted this quote on Facebook, and I just have to repost it:
"Joyfully celebrating the killing of a killer who joyfully celebrated killing carries an irony that I hope will not be lost on us. Are we learning anything, or simply spinning harder in the cycle of violence?"
-Brian McLaren
We should be grateful for the selfless actions of our military men and women, but we should not be so damn happy. A new leader will take his place. A new threat will be on the horizon. We will continue to perpetuate the cycle. If only this were Utopia, and there was a peaceful solution.
On another topic, even closer to home, the NDP have become the official opposition party of Canada. Such a historic moment. I have voted NDP (with a few times of venturing to the Liberal side) since I was of age to vote. It was amazing to see that Canada is starting to embrace change! We do now have a majority Conservative government (not ideal in my opinion), but I am encouraged to see the NDP having a very strong voice in parliament. I think it is a great chance for Canadians to see what they can do. Although I have generally always been an NDP supporter, I always kind of wondered what would happen if they were the leading party. I think having them as the opposition is the perfect way to have them start as a 'big hitter' in our federal governement. I'm excited to see how things unfold (although I'm not thrilled about the majority government).
Anyways, enough of my ramblings, as I'm not in the best position to debate politics. I am most certainly not a die-hard follower, and these are just my thoughts at the moment, half-way through my first coffee of the morning on limited sleep.
Now, to get some laundry done so I can attend my daughter's class open house in something other than yoga pants and a stained t-shirt!
